From Summer to Fall: How to Transition Your Skincare Routine

Every year around this time, patients come into the office asking the same question: “Why does my skin suddenly feel different?”

The answer is simple: your skin doesn’t operate on the calendar, it operates on the environment. As humidity drops, temperatures cool, indoor heating kicks back on, and UV angles shift, your skin’s barrier function, oil production, and hydration needs all change with it.

A skincare routine that felt perfect in July can leave you tight, flaky, or reactive by October if it isn’t adjusted.

Why Fall Is Different for Your Skin

In summer, skin tends to run oilier, sweat more, and benefit from lightweight, oil-controlling formulas.

As fall arrives:

  • Humidity drops, so skin loses water to the air more easily (transepidermal water loss increases).

  • Indoor heat starts drying out the air around you.

  • Cell turnover slows slightly as UV exposure decreases, which can leave summer’s sun damage and dullness more visible.

  • Barrier repair becomes the priority, since a compromised barrier in fall sets patients up for sensitivity all winter.

The goal of a fall routine isn’t to overhaul everything. It’s to layer in more hydration and barrier support while keeping the actives that are already working.

Step 1: Ease Up on Exfoliation, Don’t Abandon It

Summer skin can often tolerate more frequent exfoliation. In fall, dead skin cells still accumulate, often faster as drier air speeds up flaking, but the skin has less resilience to bounce back from over-exfoliating.

Product pick: ZO Skin Health Exfoliating Polish or Exfoliation Accelerator, used 2–3 times per week instead of daily. This keeps the surface smooth enough for your serums to actually absorb, without stripping the barrier.

Step 2: Reinforce Antioxidant Protection

Patients often assume antioxidants are a “summer sun protection” step. In reality, wind, indoor heating, and pollution are just as oxidative as UV rays, and fall brings all three.

Product picks:

  • ZO Skin Health Illuminating AOX Serum: Lightweight antioxidant and peptide combination that layers well under SPF.

  • SkinBetter Science Alto Advanced Defense and Repair Serum: One of the more potent antioxidant formulas available, ideal for patients who want stronger environmental protection heading into the drier months.

Step 3: Upgrade Hydration Before Skin Gets Tight

This is the step patients skip most often, and the one that causes the most fall skin complaints. A summer moisturizer built for oil control usually isn’t enough once the air dries out.

Product picks:

  • ZO Skin Health Renewal Crème: Richer, barrier-supportive, good for patients who ran a gel moisturizer all summer.

  • SkinBetter Science Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment: Supports the barrier while still feeling elegant under makeup, a nice middle ground for combination skin.

Step 4: Bring Back (or Increase) Retinoids

Many patients back off retinoids in summer due to sun sensitivity. Fall is the ideal time to reintroduce them or increase strength, since UV intensity is lower and skin can tolerate more active ingredients without the same risk of pigment flare-ups.

Product picks:

  • ZO Skin Health Growth Factor Serum: Supports collagen and repair, pairs well with a returning retinoid routine.

  • SkinBetter Science AlphaRet Overnight Cream: A retinoid bonded to lactic acid, which gives retinol-level results with noticeably less irritation, making it a great choice for patients restarting actives after a summer break.

Step 5: Don’t Drop SPF

This is worth repeating every season: UV doesn’t disappear in fall. Cloud cover and cooler air create a false sense of security, but UV rays still reach the skin and are a major driver of the fine lines and pigment patients come in to treat.

Product pick: Continue daily mineral SPF. ZO’s Daily Mineral SunShade or SkinBetter’s Sunbetter SPF line both layer well under makeup and won’t undo the work of your antioxidant serum.

A Simple Fall Skincare Routine Framework

  • Exfoliation: Shift from daily or every other day to 2–3 times per week.

  • Antioxidant serum: Keep your morning serum, but prioritize consistency as pollution and wind increase.

  • Moisturizer: Swap a gel or lightweight lotion for a richer, barrier-focused cream.

  • Retinoid: If paused or using a low strength, reintroduce or increase strength.

  • SPF: Still daily. No exceptions.

Final Thought

The most common mistake I see isn’t using the wrong products. It’s not adjusting at all.

Skin is responsive to its environment, and a few small swaps each season keep the barrier strong and prevent the “why is my skin suddenly acting up” scramble that tends to hit in late October.
