What is Botox®?

Botox is one of the most common injectable cosmetic drugs to ever be developed. Botulinum toxin forms the foundation of this treatment. The solution has been widely studied. In fact, botulinum toxin was used therapeutically for many years before the development of BotoxBotox is a safe and trusted FDA-approved injectable that helps millions of women and men look their best with minimal to no downtime. Benefits of Botox® injections

Botox is the leading cosmetic of its kind in the world. This is because treatment offers straightforward benefits such as:

– Convenient treatment
– Minimally invasive injections are virtually painless
– Side effects are mild and temporary
– FDA-approval indicates safety and efficacy
– Studies also suggest that the relaxation of certain facial muscles can boost mood

Before & After Botox® Injections

Who is a good candidate for Botox®?

Most adults are great candidates for Botox. There is no “ideal age” at which treatment should begin. We treat patients of all ages; from younger adults who want to postpone the onset of dynamic wrinkles to older adults interested in smoothing lines around the eyes.

What is Dysport®?

Dysport is similar to Botox in that it contains purified particles of botulinum toxin A protein as well as additional protective proteins. The weight of Dysport is slightly less than Botox, though, which allows it to spread farther than the heavier product.

What is the difference between Botox® and Dysport®?

Botox and Dysport are all formulated with the same botulinum toxin A substance. Side effects are similar between all products, as are general effects. Where they differ the most is in their particle weight. Botox is the heaviest of the three, making it ideal for localization and precision. Dysport is the mid-line weight.

How does Botox®/Dysport® work?

Botox and Dysport are both categorized as neuromodulators. Each affects the muscles that are involved in facial expression. Typically, when we make facial expressions like frowning, smiling, and squinting, muscles contract when they receive the neurotransmitter known as acetylcholine. When the brain sends this chemical to muscles, it binds with receptors, resulting in contraction. Neuromodulators bind to those receptors in the muscle, thereby blocking them from receiving nerve signals.

Nerves continue to send signals to muscles to contract even after Botox or other neuromodulator treatment. These signals are simply interrupted. Getting Botox doesn’t mean the ability to make facial expressions is disabled completely; it means that contractions are softened for a period of time. This softening begins about 48 hours after injections and reaches its peak within 7 to 10 days.

Areas treated with Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators are often used on the upper face, including areas such as:

– Forehead lines (worry lines)
– Frown lines between the browns
– Bunny lines at the top of the nose
– Crows’ feet at the corners of the eyes
– Eyebrows to lift heavy upper eyelids.

Additional areas on the lower face may also be treated. For example, some people receive Botox in the temporomandibular area to reduce jaw muscle tightness. Treatment may also be performed to reduce a chin dimple, correct downturned corners of the mouth, or reduce neck bands.

Your cosmetic injectable treatment at Rêvée

The Botox and Dysport treatment can be conducted immediately following your consultation with one of our experienced injectors. After cleansing the treatment area, a tiny needle is used to administer the injectable to superficial muscle tissue. The entire process typically takes less than thirty minutes.

How much of the injectable will I need?

A trained, experienced injector can determine the appropriate amount of Botox or other injectable based on the type and severity of lines. On average, frown lines can be smoothed with approximately 20 units. Forehead lines may respond to fewer units. Your provider at Rêvée will discuss how much Botox you may need to achieve your desired result.

Is there any downtime after receiving injections?

There is no downtime after cosmetic injections. Side effects such as pinpoint redness and swelling may occur but tend to fade within an hour or two. Most of our patients return to their normal activities right after treatment.

How long does Botox® and Dysport® last?

The results of Botox and Dysport appear gradually starting the second day after treatment. From that point, treated lines and wrinkles can be expected to decrease or go away altogether for a period of 3 to 4 months. Some people find that their results last longer as they continue receiving maintenance treatments. In other cases, slight resistance can occur. This usually happens after years of ongoing treatment, if it happens at all.

How many treatments will I need and how often?

Results are usually achieved after just one Botox treatment. Maintenance may take place every 3 to 6 months as needed.

Will I become addicted to injections?

No, you will not become “addicted”. You may really love your appearance after the treatments and may wish to continue- but this is not an “addiction”.

Dermal Fillers Vs. Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators and dermal fillers are all used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but they work differently. Neuromodulators are used on dynamic wrinkles; those that occur from facial expressions. Dermal fillers are used on lines and creases that result from changes in the dermis. These products plump the skin with hyaluronic acid or other structural ingredients that remain stable in superficial tissue for up to 24 months.
