Common Aesthetic Myths Debunked

With aesthetic treatments becoming more mainstream, there’s no shortage of information online but not all (or even the majority) of it is accurate. As a physician associate in aesthetic medicine practicing for almost a decade, I often hear the same concerns from patients considering injectables. Let’s break down some of the most common myths surrounding Botox, dermal fillers, and biostimulators like Sculptra.

Myth #1: Botox will make your face look frozen.
This fear is incredibly common, and almost always unfounded. When Botox is used correctly, the goal is not to eliminate expression, but to soften muscle movement that causes lines over time. A natural result allows you to look refreshed, not stiff. Overdone results are usually due to excessive dosing or poor technique, not the product itself. Let’s be honest, some patients WANT to be frozen. The key to a great treatment is being mindful of other adverse outcomes as well. A few common examples are a spocked brow, brow or lid ptosis, or asymmetry of the smile. To avoid this, make sure you are seeing a trained and educated injector.
Myth #2: Injectables will always look obvious to other people.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that people will immediately know you’ve had something “done.” In reality, the best injectable results are often invisible to others. Patients are more likely to hear comments like, “You look well-rested” or “Did you change your skincare?” Subtle and gradual treatments enhance facial balance rather than draw attention. If an injectable looks obvious, it’s usually because it was overdone and not because injectables are inherently noticeable. This comes down to the provider’s clinical judgment, skill level, and products of choice.

Myth #3: Fillers always make you look puffy or fake.
Today’s fillers are designed to restore lost structure and support, not simply add volume. When placed strategically, they can improve facial contours, soften shadows, and create a more youthful appearance without looking overfilled. The key is individualized treatment planning and respecting natural facial anatomy. At Revee, we have an arsenal of different types of fillers. Each has its own unique characteristics geared towards certain types of enhancement, different layers of the tissue, and the patient’s specific treatment goal. A great indicator of an injector's style and skill level is reviewing before and after photos and having a direct and honest consultation prior to treatment.
Myth #4: Sculptra is just another filler.
Sculptra works differently than traditional fillers. Rather than providing immediate volume, it stimulates your body’s natural collagen production over time. Results develop gradually and can last two years or more, making it an excellent option for patients who want subtle, long-lasting improvement in skin quality and facial structure. Sculptra is designed to replace collagen as it is naturally breaking down from generalized aging as well as hormonal changes, environmental exposures, and a myriad of intrinsic and extrinsic factors.
Myth #5: Injectables are unaffordable.
While injectables are an investment and an elective luxury no doubt, many patients are surprised to learn how manageable the cost can be when broken down over time. Botox typically lasts three to four months, fillers can last 9–18 months (or longer), and Sculptra often lasts two years or more. When you divide the cost by the number of months you’re enjoying the results, it often becomes comparable to other monthly self-care expenses. Revee also offers flexible payment options such as CareCredit or Cherry financing, making treatments more accessible without paying everything upfront.
Myth #6: You should wait until you “need” injectables.
Preventative treatments can help slow the formation of deeper lines and volume loss over time. Starting earlier doesn’t mean doing more. In fact, it often means doing less, just more strategically, and maintaining results long-term. Being proactive is certainly better than being reactive when it comes to the aging process. A lot of people do not realize that we experience aging related changes as early as our 20s!
Aesthetic treatments aren’t about changing who you are, they’re about enhancing your natural features and helping you feel confident. Understanding the facts allows patients to make informed, empowered decisions about their care. If you come across a filler or botox claim on tiktok or instagram that sounds extreme, scary, or outrageous, feel free to bring your concerns to your chosen provider so they can ameliorate all of your worries.
