What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing has been used for years to reduce the signs of aging and sun damage. This non-surgical, minimally-invasive technique has improved over time to reduce the side effects associated with ablative treatments. The resurfacing devices commonly used today are fractional, meaning they break up the pulses of laser energy so only a fraction of the skin’s surface is vaporized. This increases the healing response and decreases side effects and downtime.

Laser skin resurfacing treatments at Rêvée use powerful light energy to revitalize skin from deep within for an overall improvement to the look and feel of skin. To achieve healthier, younger-looking skin, we offer two types of laser skin resurfacing in Richmond, VA—Halo™ Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing and MicroLaserPeel®.

Benefits of skin resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing has a variety of benefits. Skin resurfacing can:

– Decrease the signs of sun damage and aging
– Minimize the appearance of minor scars and fine lines
– Stimulate collagen production for ongoing tissue regeneration
– Quickly improve skin with minimal downtime
– Treat precancerous lesions

Who is a candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Many adults are good candidates for fractional laser skin resurfacing. Treatment may be sought to improve the general appearance of the skin and even to maximize the results of other treatments such as a facelift. Good skin health is ideal and people with active infection or an acne flare-up may not be good candidates until their condition has been properly treated.

What areas can be treated with laser resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing is commonly performed on parts of the face or the entire face. Additional areas that can be treated include the neck, chest, arms, and hands.

Skin issues treated with skin resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is advantageous because it can treat multiple concerns simultaneously. Resurfacing is also an excellent way to prolong youthful-looking skin. Concerns for which Halo and MicroPeel treatment may be appropriate include:

– Sun damage
– Shallow scarring
– Fine lines
– Irregular pigment
– Rough or uneven texture

Laser skin resurfacing treatment

Skin resurfacing is conducted after topical numbing cream has sat on the surface for about an hour. The treatment process can take up to an hour depending on the area being treated. During the process, a handheld device is passed over the surface area. Usually, multiple passes are made. After treatment is completed, the skin may be misted or otherwise treated to minimize the sensation of heat caused by energy absorption.

MicroLaserPeel

For lighter skin resurfacing, we offer MicroLaserPeel in Richmond, VA. MicroLaserPeel gently removes a very thin layer of skin to restore a more youthful appearance by revealing more evenly toned, smoother skin with diminished lines and pores. MicroLaserPeel can be tailored to meet your skin’s unique needs and offers healthier, younger-looking skin with minimal downtime.*

Micro Laser Peel treatment can improve:

– Uneven skin tone
– Freckles and blotchiness
– Age spots
– Fine lines
– Sun damage
– Roughness
– Pore size

Is Laser Resurfacing painful?

The laser treatments that we perform are very comfortable for most patients. Before we commence with the selected procedure, we apply a topical anesthetic to the skin. Over the course of about an hour, the medication absorbs into superficial tissue where it desensitizes nerve endings. Patients may also take ibuprofen or acetaminophen while the local anesthetic is soaking in. In combination, these two techniques should significantly decrease any warmth or discomfort that may be felt during treatment.

Recovery after skin resurfacing

Some patients can immediately resume normal activities after laser skin resurfacing. However, the post-treatment recovery can extend up to several days.

After laser treatment, the skin may appear red to some degree. Again, this varies from one person to another and also with the depth of laser penetration. In addition, mild to moderate swelling should be expected. This may appear worse the day after treatment before progressively improving over the next few days.*

The absorption of laser energy into the dermis can result in prolonged warmth, similar to having a moderate sunburn. Cool air may be used to decrease this side effect. By the morning after treatment, most patients report that this sensation has fully resolved.*

How many laser treatments will I need?

We are able to estimate the appropriate number of treatments for each patient during a thorough consultation and skin exam. Noticeable results occur after just one treatment, but a series of three or more may be recommended depending on the extent of improvement desired.*

Laser skin resurfacing can be included into an ongoing beauty regimen and repeated yearly or on the unique schedule that suits each person.

Risks of skin resurfacing

The laser resurfacing procedures offered in our office generally carry very few risks, which is why they are so popular. As with all laser treatments, though, there is a minor risk of scarring, skin discoloration, and infection. These risks decrease substantially when you obtain treatment from a trained professional and follow post-treatment guidelines that include conscientious sun protection.
