Both Botox and dermal fillers are cosmetic injectables used to treat wrinkles and fine lines and provide a rejuvenated, more youthful appearance. Botox is made of the botulinum toxin, and fillers are commonly composed of hyaluronic acid. The difference between these two is that Botox relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles and fillers fill-in the areas to remove wrinkles.
The main difference between Botox and fillers is their composition. Botox is made of the botulinum toxin, which relaxes the muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Fillers, on the other hand, contain a substance like hyaluronic acid, which works to fill in problem areas to produce a more even skin tone. Hyaluronic acid is not the only compound used in fillers. Other common components include calcium hydroxyapatite and deoxycholic acid. However, hyaluronic acid is one of the most common substances used in dermal fillers.
Botox lasts, on average, around 3 to 6 months. Fillers, however, last much longer from around 12 to 18 months. There are a number of factors that determine how long a filler or Botox will last, such as the amount used, how many procedures have been performed previously, the patient’s metabolism, which area is being treated and the aftercare steps taken.
As is always the case, the outcome for any cosmetic injection will vary from person to person. The biggest factors that may affect how long it lasts are the area being treated and the amount used. Other factors include wrinkle depth, your age and the elasticity of your skin. Both cosmetic treatments work quickly with noticeable results within a couple of days after your session.
When deciding between Botox or Juvederm, it is important to consider how soon after treatment results will be visible and how long those results will last.
With Botox, you can typically expect the results to last from three to six months. Regular use of Botox may extend the results for longer periods of time as the wrinkles and lines eventually get shorter and smaller over time when facial muscles aren’t used. For plumping and defining lips, both treatments can also be effective.
Juvederm typically provides optimal results with a single treatment and the effects can range anywhere from 9 months up to 18 months. Results of the treatment also depend on the concentration of hyaluronic acid, with higher concentrations providing longer-lasting results.
While neither is inherently better than the other, some people have a preference. It all depends on the results you are looking for and what would work best for your own unique physiology.
Botox and fillers often work well together to provide the best results. However, it is often suggested to wait at least two weeks between treatments.
